Feature Friday - Chloe the Mastiff-Rottweiler Mix

Today on I Have Plans With My Dog we're featuring the grand old lady, Chloe.

Chloe is 14 years old, and is a Mastiff-Rottweiler cross, or Mastweiler for short. Because of her colouring and shagginess, most people think she's a Lab or Retriever mix. She weighs about 80 pounds, which is small for her breed. She has the prettiest eyes and smoky eyeliner. In fact, she was Miss December in the Humane Society calendar one year!

We got Chloe when she was about 10 months old. She was pretty much full grown by then, but still had all the puppy bad habits - she chewed up a TV remote, the armrest of the couch, and several carpet edges in the first few months we had her.

But she quickly became one of the best dogs ever. We lived out in the country then and we could trust her to stay away from the road, not to wander off the property, and to come when called. She was a tough student in obedience class though as she isn't particularly food motivated. Even now, when you tell her to sit or shake a paw she'll think about it before deciding what she wants to do.

Chloe absolutely adores people. She loves them more than dogs, food, or toys. In a past life she must have been a lap dog because she likes nothing better than to lean against you while you pet her fur. I like to pretend that the dogs all love me best, but Chloe has always been Tom's dog.

She wasn't thrilled when we got Sasha, but the two have become (sort of) friends. Probably more like siblings, as they could play together or avoid each other, depending on the mood. She tolerates the new pups, but she doesn't really spend any time with them. She's become a grumpy old lady.

Chloe lo-o-o-o-o-ves stuffed animals. She'll carry around 2 or 3 at a time, getting them all grubby and damp. Her favourite toy is...whichever one another dog is playing with. She'll wait quietly until the other dog is distracted and then casually walk by, scooping up the toy on her way out of the room. We always find a stash of stolen toys in the bedroom.

She'll also let you dress her up in just about anything. She's worn every set of bunny ears, sunglasses, and Halloween costume that has come into the house. She even ended up wrapped in Christmas lights one year when I was decorating.

Now that she's older she's starting to slow down. She doesn't wrestle with Sasha anymore and she's very careful when she's walking up and down the stairs. She likes to spend her time curled up in one of the many dog beds, looking out the window or snoozing. It's heartbreaking to see but we have to accept it as a part of life. We have so many good memories with her that there's no reason to be sad.
